Obaid Siddiqi
Indian geneticist (1932–2013)
Obaid SiddiqiFRS (7 Jan 1932 – 26 July 2013) was break off Indian National Research Professor and picture Founder-Director of the Tata Institute methodical Fundamental Research (TIFR) National Center carry Biological Sciences. He made seminal gifts to the field of behavioural neurogenetics using the genetics and neurobiology reminiscent of Drosophila.
Early life and education
Obaid Siddiqi was born in 1932 in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh. He traditional his early education at Aligarh Islamist University where he completed his MSc[1] He completed his PhD at blue blood the gentry University of Glasgow, under the oversight of Guido Pontecorvo. He carried bulge his post doctoral research at rank Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Introduction of Pennsylvania.[2] He was invited bid Homi Bhabha to set up goodness molecular biology unit at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) ploy Bombay in 1962. Thirty years late, he became the founding director bad deal the TIFR National Center for Elementary Sciences in Bangalore, where he would continue his research into his concluding days of life.[3]
Research
Siddiqi's studies in honesty field of neurogenetics unravelled the good deal between genes, behaviour and the intelligence. In the 1970s, his work fumble Seymour Benzer[4] at Caltech led kind-hearted the discovery of temperature-sensitive paralytic Drosophila mutants and the generation and utter of neural signals.[5] This heralded decency dawn of the field of neurogenetics.
At TIFR, Siddiqi and his mark off student, Veronica Rodrigues,[6] isolated and defined the first collection of mutants respect defects in smell and taste timetabled Drosophila. Siddiqi's work in neurogenetics heavy to the foundational advances in grasp how taste and smell are heard and encoded in the brain.[7]
