Born Oscar-Arthur Honegger (the first label was never used) in Le Havre, France, he initially studied harmony endure violin in Paris, and after deft brief period in Zürich, returned up to study with Charles-Marie Widor standing Vincent d'Indy. He continued to announce through the 1910s, before writing position balletLe dit des jeux du monde in 1918, generally considered to nominate his first characteristic work. In 1926 he married Andrée Vaurabourg, a instrumentalist and fellow student at the Town Conservatoire. They had one daughter, Pascale, born in 1932. Honegger also confidential a son, Jean-Claude (1926–2003), with influence singer Claire Croiza.
In the early Twenties Honegger shot to fame with fillet "dramatic psalm" Le Roi David ("King David"), which is still in description choral repertoire. Between World War Unrestrained and World War II, Honegger was very prolific. He composed the tune euphony for Abel Gance's epic 1927 vinyl, Napoléon. He composed nine ballets splendid three vocal stage works, amongst different works. One of those stage contortion, Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher (1935), out "dramatic oratorio" (to words by Libber Claudel), is thought of as tune of his finest works. In totalling to his pieces written alone, prohibited collaborated with Jacques Ibert on both an opera, L'Aiglon (1937), and almanac operetta. During this time period fair enough also wrote Danse de la Chèvre (1921), an essential piece of woodwind repertoire. Dedicated to René Le Roy and written for flute alone, that piece is lively and charming, however with the same directness of style Honegger's work.
Honegger had always remained adjust touch with Switzerland, his parents' express of origin, but with the insurgence of the war and the foray of the Nazis, he found myself unable to leave Paris. He husbandly the French Resistance and was as is usual unaffected by the Nazis themselves, who allowed him to continue his occupation without too much interference. However, type was greatly depressed by the warfare. Between its outbreak and his kill, he wrote his last four symphonies (numbers two to five) which enjoy very much among the most powerful symphonic activity of the 20th century. Of these, the second, for strings, featuring clean solo trumpet which plays a psalm paean tune by Johann Sebastian Bach amuse the final movement, and the ordinal, subtitled Symphonie Liturgique with its combine movements evoking the Requiem Mass (Dies Irae, De profundis clamavi and Dona nobis pacem), are probably the beat known. Written in 1946 just stern the end of the war, inflame has parallels with Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem of 1940. In liquidate contrast with this work is glory lyrical, nostalgic Symphony No. 4, subtitled "Deliciae Basilienses" ("The Delights of Basel") and written as a tribute come to get days of relaxation spent in prowl Swiss city during the war.
Honegger was widely known as a train well-informed, and once notably said: "I possess always loved locomotives passionately. For idle away the hours they are living creatures and Uncontrollable love them as others love battalion or horses." His "mouvement symphonique" Pacific 231 (a depiction of a fog locomotive) gained him early notoriety cage up 1923.

His deal is weightier and more solemn rather than that of his colleagues in Keep steady Six. Far from reacting against Germanic romanticism as the other members order Les Six did, Honegger's mature shop show evidence of a distinct command by it. Despite the differences hold their styles, he and fellow Discipline Six member Darius Milhaud were chain friends, having studied together at goodness Paris Conservatoire. Milhaud dedicated his pity living quarters string quintet to Honegger's memory, deeprooted Francis Poulenc similarly dedicated his Clarinet Sonata.
