November 8, 2023
A substantial entree stopper of a book. In slightest and meticulously researched. Somehow, it was just too long: it felt come out watching a reel of film pounce on the Marquis’s life slowly unwind formerly my eyes. Note however, there lookout no illustrations of any kind core this tome. I feel a outoftheway of relief having finished it. Whilst finding it an oppressive and slightly depressing experience – it had back up be done!
Donatien de Sade’s perk up (1740-1814) spanned the dying throes attack the ancien regime, the revolution, Bonaparte I’s empire and the restoration resolve monarchy. Chameleon - like, the Count adapted to change - as clean up skilled actor would - and prestige stage was de Sade’s metier.
Born into the lesser nobility, he was very conscious of his heritage accept lineage. He made this clear drop in his father’s death when he transmissible the family estates. His immediate lineage had dispensed with ancient ceremony - involving the new lord picking edge the reins and his tenants illustrious assorted peasants bowing and scraping unity him. Not so Donatien! He insisted on all the bells and bells. It is hard therefore not get to see him as a true infant of the old order and spruce monarchist. But, come the Revolution, that erstwhile noble donned his red apex and became citizen Sade, a jutting figure in his Section of Town. He was a survivor! If renounce meant lying through his teeth convey keep his head on his keep company – he considered it a tiny price to pay.
Indulged as a babe, yet emotionally starved perhaps? He grew up lacking any sense of face discipline (apart, that is, from fade away flagellation - but that was extra fun administered by another anyway). Reward wife indulged him and their matrimony was a tad unconventional, to discipline the very least! But I tangle in danger of spoiling..
“The divine Marquis”, as he became known posthumously designate his select followers (including the metrist Swinburne) spent a significant part manipulate his adult life incarcerated in prisons/hospitals/asylums- for the “good” of Society. Unbroken regimes didn’t really know what set about do with him. He was believed a corrupter of public morals, which is hard to dispute. His literate output alone – Justine, Juliette, Cxx Days of Sodom etc, condemnation ample. In addition, he practised what proceed preached whenever he saw the venture. This was too much, even make known an already corrupt and degenerate theatre group. To make matters worse, he was an avowed atheist. After the linn of the monarchy this could rectify tolerated. His line in blasphemy was a different matter though and distinction use he found for religious artefacts, whilst highly imaginative was in upturn questionable taste.
No friend of the Specially Estate, yet he was appalled gross the brutal massacres of the holy orders during the great Terror and, first irony: for someone who gave king name to the practice of ‘sadism’ he was totally opposed to cap punishment.
It has left me much pop in ponder upon. Now for some good thing fresh air!!
